The Perfume Museum is located in the center of Cologne at Obenmarspforten 21. Italian by origin, Johann Maria Farina emigrated to Germany and lived his entire life in Cologne. In 1709, the young Italian pharmacist created an original perfume scent and called it "Cologne water". In 1723, Farina opened a manufactory and established mass production of the perfume that the Germans loved.



"Cologne water" quickly began to gain popularity outside of Germany. Cologne became the center of perfume production. Interestingly , the French brought world fame to German perfumes. the name Eau de Cologne, which in French means Cologne water. Over time, a less concentrated version of the popular perfume was called "eau de cologne", which became a general designation for light perfumes.



In the 18th century, German perfumes enjoyed whatsapp number database success. Noble persons from all over Europe ordered Cologne water produced by the Farina perfume factory. Goethe mentioned Cologne water in his Faust, it served as an inspiration for Voltaire, and the famous cologne was loved by Tolstoy and Gogol. The Farina perfume house became the supplier of perfumes for Queen Victoria and most European monarchs.



During the occupation of Cologne by Napoleon's troops, another factory was created here, which began producing counterfeit Cologne water. The perfume it produced was called 4711 and over time also became one of the world's famous brands. Despite the popularity of the 4711 brand, the Farina perfume factory is considered the historical birthplace of cologne.



Nowadays, the Farina House is a popular landmark in Cologne. It houses the Perfume Museum and the Perfume Factory on several floors. The museum tells the story of the development of perfume art and the appearance of the famous Cologne Eau de Cologne. The halls exhibit old perfume production equipment, photographs and paintings describing technological processes, and a large collection of bottles that were used at different times to bottle the Farina factory's products.
