The year 2005 marked a turning point in the market, marking the beginning of a transition in the EMEA region characterized by the growing commoditization of laptops, forcing PC manufacturers to develop increasingly efficient business models. The proliferation of low-cost entry-level systems and generally falling prices have acted as sales drivers, especially in the consumer segment, boosting penetration rates for this type of equipment.
. As a result, in 2005, laptop PC sales increased by a whopping 31.1%, although email database desktop sales still registered a healthy increase of 7.5%. Overall, PC shipments in Western Europe reached 47 million units last year, representing a 16.3% increase over the figure reached in 2004. Sales value (€42 billion), however, only increased by 4.1% year-over-year.
In any case, the average growth rate for the next five years, although significant, will be lower than last year's. Global sales from 2006 to 2007 will slow, reducing growth to 9% due to the laconic nature of the desktop segment. Nevertheless, notebooks will continue to fuel demand and business opportunities for suppliers. Between 2006 and 2007, annual notebook sales growth will be 18%, according to IDC, although the increase in revenue terms, due to continued downward pressure on prices, will not be as high.
