Interview with Nicole Pfisterer, Commercial Director at DomainFactory, about prices of the various top-level domains (TLDs). What causes the large price differences between the individual providers? And what should you look out for when choosing a domain and provider?
Ms. Pfisterer, let's talk about domain costs. Why do some top-level domains (TLDs) cost only 99 cents a month and others cost hundreds of euros?
You are right, that seems malta phone data very surprising at first glance. But you have to take into account that domain prices depend on many factors. If you want to register a domain , you do so with an accredited company, the "registrar". However, this is only an intermediary between you and the so-called "registry" that manages and markets the desired TLD. For .com, .org or .net domains, for example, this is Verisign, for .de it is DENIC. Many other TLDs are marketed by so-called sponsors for a specific purpose. These registries largely determine the guidelines for names and allocation, as well as the prices.
For example: The cheapest TLDs at DomainFactory are .de and .works for 99 cents a month. The most expensive is .rich, for which you have to pay almost 350 euros a month. .systems is managed and marketed together with over 200 other new generic TLDs (gTLDs) by the American domain administrator Donuts Inc., which was founded specifically for this purpose. .rich, on the other hand, is advertised by its registry as an "online club for the rich"; the high price is intended to ensure the club's exclusivity.
That sounds plausible. But it still doesn't explain the significant price differences between different providers, i.e. registrars, for a particular TLD.
That's right. Now the market comes into play. You've probably already noticed that not every domain or web hosting provider offers every one of the more than 1,500 top-level domains that now exist. Anyone who wants to include a TLD in their offer must be specifically accredited by the relevant registry. Every provider therefore thinks very carefully about which TLDs are attractive to their customers and under what conditions they can offer them.
The registry charges fees for each registration, usually on a volume-based basis. That's why we ordered a larger contingent from .systems and can offer our customers this TLD at a particularly low price.
Another cost factor is the administration costs. The registrar must check whether the requested domain name complies with the registry's requirements and, if necessary, whether the applicant meets the registry's conditions for allocation. If everything is OK, the registrar must then collect and transmit the necessary information for the WHOIS entry.
How does DomainFactory compare in terms of costs to other providers?
That clearly depends on the TLD you are looking at. Basically, we base our prices on the usual level. Nevertheless, we try to put together special offers where it makes sense. We are currently one of the cheapest providers for some of the new gTLDs, including .systems, .email, .solutions, .media, .reisen, .academy, .shop, .shopping and .jetzt (as of September 6, 2020). But we also have very competitive offers for popular TLDs such as .de, .com, .org, .net, .eu and .biz. We also offer a volume discount of 15 percent here, and up to 40 percent for .de. You will receive the discount for a total of 100 domains, regardless of their ending and including external domains.
