Communities of old-fashioned pioneers (cowboys), patriots who remember America as it used to be before the 1960's, and are sickened to see what has happened to their beloved country; some even want their states to claim independence from modern day America with its world wide economic and social entanglements. Remember that states declared independence from Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington. These survivalists idealize the old Confederacy and fore-see another Civil War in an American empire that is fragmenting, as Richard Lamm’s title was re-designed to declare.
They would break free from the "Union", much the job function email list way so many Soviet Republics, such as the Baltics, have liberated themselves from Moscow's central control. They have a definite ideology and way of life. Survivalists believe in doing things for themselves in traditional ways. Popular culture, big cities, and big government are all rejected; the whole "system" is rejected as corrupt and oppressive. They study demographic changes in America's population and fear that the nation is declining. These are educated people who read books: ergo, Gordon/Revisionist Press. They have their own economic and political theories, which are very different from the conventional opinions expressed in the official media.
They have their origins in splinter groups that are religious, but clearly at odds with the main-stream Churches. Some are fundamentalist Christians and others are non-Christian. But they all see themselves as the real Americans. The philosophy of "sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll" is decadent in their eyes. A book on old-fashioned dancing by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford would interest such a community of decent folk. Homeopathic medicine is practical for people who reject urban living. But the nation they live in will not let them just drop out of society and disappear into the mountains of America's North-West or South-East.
